To let AirMote connect to a computer, permission has to be given that allows it. You set up a password on the Macintosh, and then tell it to AirMote.

  1. Open System Preferences. The preferences window will appear.Preferences Dialog

  2. Select the Sharing icon. The Sharing pane will appear.

  3. Select the Remote Management service in the list at the left side so it is highlighted. Turn on the Remote Management checkbox. The main part of the window will say “Remote Management: On”.

  4. Select the “Computer Settings…” button. A dialog box will drop down.

  5. Turn on the checkbox for “VNC viewers may control screen with password” and enter a password. You will need to supply this password in the AirMote application when making a connection.

  6. Select the OK button, and close the System Preferences window.

Now the computer should appear in the Add Connection screen’s “Local WiFi Connections” list. If it still does not, check firewall and WiFi settings. The remote computer needs TCP port 5900 to be open. If your computer goes through a router device, especially if you are using an Internet connection as opposed to WiFi, you may need to set this. The procedure varies by router manufacturer, but typically you get to the router controls by going to a special web page address such as 192.168.1.1

AirMote should be able to connect to any Macintosh computer running OS X 10.4 or above using similar settings. If your computer is not on WiFi but is connected to the Internet and port 5900 is open, you should be able to make an Internet connection by specifying the DNS network name of the computer, or it’s IP address, in the Address field of an Advanced connection.
